{"id":865,"date":"2026-04-27T07:03:40","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T07:03:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/esport.com.ng\/?p=865"},"modified":"2026-04-27T07:03:40","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T07:03:40","slug":"he-will-still-play-a-big-part","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/esport.com.ng\/?p=865","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;He will still play a big part&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div><!-- Article Start --><\/p>\n<p>Arsenal legend Paul Merson thinks Viktor Gyokeres will start against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>The Sweden international, who has scored 18 goals in all competitions this season, was on the bench again as <strong>Arsenal<\/strong> beat Newcastle 1-0 on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Arteta decided to start Havertz over Gyokeres for their key clash against the Geordies, which saw Eberechi Eze score the only goal of the game to put Arsenal top of <strong>the Premier League<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Arsenal are now three points ahead of Manchester City, who have a game in hand, while the Gunners face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>And Merson has urged Arteta to start Gyokeres against the Spanish giants in midweek with the Swede ideal at holding the ball up.<\/p>\n<p>Merson told <em>Sky Sports<\/em>: \u201cHe (Gyokeres) will still play a big part in it (Arsenal\u2019s title run-in).<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: Arsenal title plan has slight flaw as Arteta aims to go Invincible in \u2018new league\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, he plays in Europe on Wednesday night because he will hold the ball up. Arsenal will be under pressure and it will be a difficult game for them in Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s when you need Gyokeres to get you a throw in down the touchline, he runs after lost causes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest time the whole crowed lifted today was when he cleared the ball from a corner and chased it down there and won it back and it lifted everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><smartframe-embed customer-id=\"0b629b85ba2abe5ff39df9829ee5fb57\" image-id=\"mcfcvvg47GvY\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 100%;\"\/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Havertz injury \u2018looks like a lengthy one\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Gyokeres replaced Havertz on 34 minutes with Arsenal legend Ian Wright concerned that the injury the German picked up could be \u201ca lengthy one\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Wright told <em>Premier League Productions<\/em>: \u201cI\u2019m quite concerned when you consider he has broken down again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can see how disappointed he is\u00a0 and you can tell when you see someone walking off like that\u2026 you can see the difference in Eze walking off and the difference in Havertz walking off.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: Arteta tells Arsenal to sign \u00a352m South American as contact made<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEze is saying he\u2019s alright and it\u2019s precautionary. But with Havertz, that looks like a lengthy one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on the result, Arsenal boss Arteta said: \u201cGame one, done! We\u2019ve been talking about that reset after Manchester, and do what is in our hands. We certainly approached the game the right way, started quite well, and scored a beautiful goal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believed it was the right thing to do against the physicality and the way they have adapted to us in set-pieces to try something else. When we did it the first time, the crowd wasn\u2019t very sure about that, it didn\u2019t work out. So, the second time, do you have the courage to do the right thing? And the players did it, we did it. It didn\u2019t work out, he shot but it went off target.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen the big question is, do you have the courage to do it again? And the boys did it and I love that.
