Arsenal suffered heartbreak in the Champions League final in Budapest as they were beaten 4-3 on penalties by PSG after a tense 1-1 draw in 120 minutes.<\/p>\n

It was set to be a historic evening for whoever won the coveted trophy – Arsenal looking for their first Champions League title 20 years on from their last final appearance and to complete a historic double after their Premier League title win.<\/p>\n

PSG were aiming to defend the title they won last year – and became the first team since Real Madrid between 2015 and 2018 to retain the European trophy.<\/p>\n

Gabriel missed Arsenal’s fifth penalty as PSG celebrated winning the Champions League in successive years<\/span>

It was far from the sweeping 5-0 victory the Parisians achieved against Inter Milan 12 months ago, with Arsenal’s defensive nous that had seen them unbeaten in the Champions League until the final blunt PSG’s potent attack.<\/p>\n

The Gunners made the perfect start too as Kai Havertz powered home inside six minutes. Marquinhos’ attempted clearance hit Martin Odegaard from close range, before landing into the path of the striker.<\/p>\n

His lung-busting run ended with a superb finish from a tight angle over the head of the kneeling Matvey Safonov. It was another goal for Havertz in a Champions League final after he scored the only goal in a 1-0 win for Chelsea against Man City in 2021.<\/p>\n

Kai Havertz is only the third player to score for two different teams in a Champions League final (Chelsea, Arsenal), after Cristiano Ronaldo (Man Utd, Real Madrid) and Mario Mandzukic (Juventus, Bayern Munich).<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Arsenal fans in London and American supporters in Kansas City celebrated Kai Havertz’s early goal against PSG in the Champions League final<\/span>

It was a defensive masterclass from Arsenal for much of the 120 minutes, with PSG left looking disjointed and void of ideas going forward at times.<\/p>\n

They needed a penalty to level after a sloppy foul from Cristhian Mosquera on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, going into the back of the PSG forward and catching him on the calf. Ousmane Dembele fired home a beautiful strike from the spot.<\/p>\n

This is the first Champions League final to see both sides score since 2018 (Real Madrid 3-1 Liverpool).<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

PSG continued to see a raft of chances in normal time as tired legs allowed the game to open up. In extra-time too, Arsenal had a penalty appeal waved away in the first 15 minutes.<\/p>\n

Noni Madueke beat Nuno Mendes on the outside into the box, getting his body in front of the defender, before going down. Declan Rice had his arms in the air, as did the entire Arsenal bench – but the incident was not even reviewed, while Rice and Mikel Arteta were both yellow carded.<\/p>\n

The game then went to the lottery of penalties. Eberechi Eze missed the Gunners’ second, but that was matched by a brilliant save from David Raya on the next spot-kick to keep out Mendes.<\/p>\n

The two teams continued to trade blows until Gabriel stepped up for Arsenal’s fifth penalty – skying it into the jubilant PSG fans behind the goal.<\/p>\n

It was a horrible moment for a player who did not deserve it – the Gunners defender had been one of their best players at the Puskas Arena – as Arsenal fell short in Europe once again.<\/p>\n

“Devastated”, Declan Rice told TNT Sports<\/em> of Eze and Gabriel after the game. “Missing a penalty in a Champions League final isn’t nice, but we love them.<\/p>\n

“It happens in football. They aren’t going to be the last players to miss a penalty in finals. Everyone has missed a penalty. Without those two this season, we wouldn’t have won the Premier League. It’s cruel, but we take the positives.”<\/p>\n

    “The emotions and the stakes are so high. It’s cruel. He (Arteta) spoke about how much he loves us as a the group. How we’ve given 100 per cent every single game with everything that’s been thrown at us.<\/p>\n
